The PSF UK sent the UK National Team to take part in the 19th Belgian Open Championships, on 3 & 4 May. The Championships, open to Pencak Silat clubs from all PERSILAT member countries, were held in Schoten, near Antwerp.
Over 120 competitors from 12 countries took part in the competitions, which were for Tanding categories only. The PSF UK President, Bapak Aidinal Alrashid headed the delegation, & the PSF UK team consisted of 3 athletes, in male weight categories B, J & Open.
The UK's Sean Kardar, in male class B, drew his first fight against Muhammad Faizul Bin M. Nasir of Malaysia, but lost on points,- his opponent went on to win Gold, and Sean won joint Bronze for the UK. In Male Class J, the UK's Vikram Lopez Y Royo fought Roy Miszalok of Pencak Silat club Sigepi of Germany in Class J, & won to go on to the second round.
The first round in the Male Open weight category saw the UK's Samir Ghanim's versus Mohd Hizam bin Dolah, of Malaysia. Samir won the match with a unanimous vote from the Wasit Juri.
Vikram Lopez Y Royo's second fight was against Dutch fighter Nick Bos of Pencak Silat Bintang Lima. Vikram won the fight due to a Technical Knock-Out, as his opponent was injured when Vikram took him down in the first round.
In the second round of Male Class Open weight, Samir Ghanim beat Thibault Lafoy of APSAHA (Pencak Silat Alhaq Haute-Savoie Association), to go through to the Final.
In J Class Final, Vikram Lopez Y Royo was pitched against Malaysia's Azrul bin Abdullah of Malaysia. Vikram fought well against this experienced fighter, but lost the match, earning Silver for the UK.
Samir Ghanim, current Open Class European Champion, faced Ferro Felix of Dutch club Satria Muda, in the Finals, beating his opponent, & winning Gold for the UK.
The PSF UK delegation also included Sue Gault - Secretary General, Karin Langle - Treasurer, Arif Kokkoz - Team Manager, and Thomas Mohamed - PSF UK Coach.
