PERSILAT Training Trip 2001 From 20 July - 3 August the Pencak Silat Federation of the UK (PSF UK) sent a team of senior students from perguruan Pencak Silat Gerak Ilham Bugis-Makassar to participate in a tailored course organised by the International Pencak Silat Federation (PERSILAT) and held at the Padepokan in Jakarta. The Padepokan with all its' excellent facilities proved an ideal venue for the training; the proximity of the accommodation, restaurant and training areas allowed the students to keep up with the exciting though rigorous training program. The teachers instructing the pesilat (students) from the UK were of the highest caliber and their skill, enthusiasm and patience has left a lasting impression on all that attended the course. The students were given the opportunity to learn basic jurus (moves) in Betawi, Sundanese, Minangkabau and Bhakti Negara Silat styles. They also attended a number of courses that gave them an insight in the rules, the scoring system and conduct of the Tanding (Olahraga) competitions. The pesilat also learned the Jurus Tunggal and Jurus Regu received an introduction to gamelan (the traditional Indonesian music). At the end of an intensive training week the pesilat "graduated" by giving a performance in front of officials, trainers and the Indonesian team in the main arena of the Padepokan. The training continued in Bali for another week and included instruction in Balinese Dancing (Tari Bali) for the girls. At the end the students gave another performance in front of hotel guests. Overall, the two week program was a huge success and we hope to be able to repeat similar training camps in the coming years.
